Finding the geek in every woman

I haven’t blogged in ages. Can’t believe that one can be so interested in or passionate about something for a while and then ‘poof’ just like that it’s gone. But thank goodness we can choose.

Well I guess that’s human nature and as we know there are only 2 constant things in life and that is – Change and Death.

As I’m definitely not dead yet change is inevitable and no amount of resistance can stop change.

So why not just embrace it with all the tenacity and fierce we would naturally use to fight it? Over the past couple of weeks I have met various women and have had countless conversations whether in a group or one on one. And one thing that stood out for me each time is that God knew what He was doing when He created women. Our ability to love, share, accept, give, forgive, be vulnerable and strong at the same time, care, support, nurture, empathize and feel and hold everything at once is truly God’s creation. So how can we not love and appreciate each other? One thing we all have in common as women is that we are all women.

So I would like to salute all the women, regardless of age. Even the young girls turning into ladies: the potential locked inside of you and emerging slowly as you grow into women is evident and not to be looked down on or taken for granted. No one is a mistake and is placed on the earth or at a specific place for nothing. We all have a purpose and destiny. And as we continue to love, care, support, share, give, forgive, accept, empathize and be vulnerable we will embrace life and all she has to offer.

They say ‘all good things must come to an end’! Saturday past was the last class for Geeky Moms and Mom 4.0 at the RLabs Academy. The morning was filled with laughter and many tears. 2011 was the first year RLabs ran training under the Academy. As both Monique (co-founder of She’s the Geek) and I are very passionate about empowering women and technology equally, that it made absolute sense for us to facilitate the Saturday morning sessions with the women at the RLabsRLabs Academy. It has been an interesting and most fulfilling journey we have embarked on yet. My favorite part of this year has been watching the women find their inner geek! So finding the geek in every woman is most definitely possible.

I read loads of articles on “women in tech” and they all seem to go around women either whining about how we don’t get enough scope or recognition from men. Funnily enough most of the writers are male. But fortunately for me, the women I find myself surrounded by do not see themselves at the bottom of the ‘tech space food chain’ but at the top of their game! Meaning there is no need to prove themselves to anyone or to fight with men for recognition, but to just enjoy technology and the beautiful journey of discovering amazing and new things everyday and how it can be used to not only make our live easier but to make a difference in someones life or to help impact an entire community.

Well for the first time in my life I actually love gadgets! A mobile phone was obviously my first gadget. It was acquired more out of necessity than out of curiosity or love. But once I got used to it, it became a fashion accessary and I remember buying covers for my Nokia 5110 to match all my outfits. Now you know how old I am (not sure how many of you remember that long back in the mobile phone era). This was in the late 90’s when you were a trend setter by the mobile device you had. Now I think you a trend setter by how you use the gadgets you have. Maybe its my unconventional thinking or just crazy notions I have now and then, but in this day and age in 2010 we cannot choose to let gadgets we possess to dictate our status! Whether you trendy or not does not depend on what make, model and year you have. Come on technology is advancing with or without us as players in the field, but what we do with what we have or have access to I think sets us apart and gives us all the status we crave and most importantly who you take to join you in the playing field as an equal player.

Presentation Time for Mom3.0 Session October 2, 2010

This morning the moms came out in full force once again to attend the Mom3.0 Cafe Session. Today the RLabs facilitators thought it would be interesting to surprise the ladies by asking them to choose their favourite social media tool. Once they have chosen their tool they would get 15min to prepare themselves and then have to present a step-by-step guide to signing in and using this tool to the rest of the class.

We always have to shift and change our mindsets and get helped out of our comfort zones. So this exercise was quite useful. The moms were good sports and when presenting, encouraged each other to continue and not focus on the mistakes during the presentations. The favourite tool of the morning was Facebook. When asked why that tool is their favourite? One of the moms shared that she loves looking at peoples pictures and reading their status updates. The fact that you can see everything on one screen is wonderful and very exciting.

Below we have one of the moms Jackie Biggswho is an avid micro blogger. She chose Twitter as her tool to present. When asked why Twitter? She answered its quick and instant. One does not have to wait before updating your status. If you feel or experienced something you can say it immediately without waiting for someone to comment on or Like your status. Jackie has been for over a year now and it is always interesting to read what she has to say and how she contributes to the world wide web.
