They say ‘all good things must come to an end’! Saturday past was the last class for Geeky Moms and Mom 4.0 at the RLabs Academy. The morning was filled with laughter and many tears. 2011 was the first year RLabs ran training under the Academy. As both Monique (co-founder of She’s the Geek) and I are very passionate about empowering women and technology equally, that it made absolute sense for us to facilitate the Saturday morning sessions with the women at the RLabsRLabs Academy. It has been an interesting and most fulfilling journey we have embarked on yet. My favorite part of this year has been watching the women find their inner geek! So finding the geek in every woman is most definitely possible.

The latest class for the Mom3.0 Cafe Session covered Skype. The women as usual came expectant and were ready to learn something new.

Monique Ross, our very own She’s the Geek did the presentation and took the women through the history of Skype, its benefits and a step-by-step guide how to sign up to Skype.

All the women signed up to Skype and updated their profiles with pictures. Thereafter, they invited friends and searched for other friends and family on Skype. Jackie Biggs (one of the moms) was brave enough to do a presentation to the rest of the class on how to sign up to Skype. She did a good job of explaining and showing the rest of the class how to sign up. She was so good that she even won a prize!

It’s very exciting to watch how the women are growing more confident with social media and within themselves. Next week we having an international Guest Speaker chatting to the women via Skype. This will be the first time this medium is used for the Mom3.0 Cafe Session to have a guest speaker. Happy calling ladies!!

Presentation Time for Mom3.0 Session October 2, 2010

This morning the moms came out in full force once again to attend the Mom3.0 Cafe Session. Today the RLabs facilitators thought it would be interesting to surprise the ladies by asking them to choose their favourite social media tool. Once they have chosen their tool they would get 15min to prepare themselves and then have to present a step-by-step guide to signing in and using this tool to the rest of the class.

We always have to shift and change our mindsets and get helped out of our comfort zones. So this exercise was quite useful. The moms were good sports and when presenting, encouraged each other to continue and not focus on the mistakes during the presentations. The favourite tool of the morning was Facebook. When asked why that tool is their favourite? One of the moms shared that she loves looking at peoples pictures and reading their status updates. The fact that you can see everything on one screen is wonderful and very exciting.

Below we have one of the moms Jackie Biggswho is an avid micro blogger. She chose Twitter as her tool to present. When asked why Twitter? She answered its quick and instant. One does not have to wait before updating your status. If you feel or experienced something you can say it immediately without waiting for someone to comment on or Like your status. Jackie has been for over a year now and it is always interesting to read what she has to say and how she contributes to the world wide web.

RLabs is having another Mom3.0 Cafe Session today. The ladies all came really early and were ready for the session. We are continuing with Vlogging and Blogging.

Below is a video clip of Melissa Johnson, one of the younger moms:

This is a video clip of Francis Herbert, one of the older moms:

The rest of the ladies updated their Facebook and Twitter statuses and checked their emails.

They also blogged on the Mom3.0 Blog and viewed each others videos on YouTube. It is always good to read what they have to say about one another’s status updates and the encouraging words left as comments.

This morning we had a good Mom3.0 Cafe Session at RLabs.

The women braved the weather. It was pouring down with rain and very cold, yet the women came from far and near not to miss out on the class.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as we had 3 new women joining the cafe session. Todays’ session was focused on Vlogging. 3 new YouTube videos were uploaded and the women created their own YouTube accounts.

A group decision was made to have cafe sessions weekly until graduation. The group is very excited and wanting to learn and experience everything about Social Media and Social Networks. Now we as facilitators need to stay up to date and keep trying out new social media tools.

Here are some pics of the session this morning and links to the videos.

A Saturday Morning at #RLabs July 3, 2010

This was an interesting day for MadamGeek at the RLabs office.

First thing this morning from 9 – 11am, Marlon Parker and Chantel Erfort ran their weekly Citizen Journalism session called ImoJourn here at RLabs. They have been running these weekly sessions since March 2010. This is a collaboration between RLabs and Cape Community Newspapers to bring Mobile Journalism to the community have been going well with the last few weeks having a focus on technologies such as Twitter, Facebook and blogging to share stories via their mobile phones. The learners from 3 high schools in Cape Town have been taught some basic journalism skills the first few months ranging from writing, editing, ethics to photography. The sessions are focused on how the learners can use their mobile phones to share stories in real time using available technologies such as Social Networking tools.

She’s the Geek, Madam Geek, Kingross, Brent’s Journey, Terence and the RLabs team came together today to host the Mom3.0 Cafe Session as part of RLabs Social Media for Social Change training. At 10am the Mom3.0 Cafe Session started with the continuation of the Speed Dating session on 19 June 2010. Today the moms played around with their facebook and twitter profiles and used online chats to communicate to some friends. And they added a bit of blogging to the session at the end.

We were honoured to have Mr. Arthur Charles van Wyk with us for a brief talk. Brent Williams invited Arthur to visit RLabs while he is in Cape Town. They met on Facebook and have been communicating via various social networks to set up the meeting. Arthur shared with the ladies his journey into the world of social media and how Social Media has changed his life. The women were in encouraged and felt inspired to continue blogging and contributing to the social media space. He says: “if you are not making a difference in someone elses life then what’s the use doing what you do?” This is exactly what RLabs is about, making a difference.

While the Mom3.0 Cafe Session was still in progress Etv’s Tech Report walked in. The team came to interview Marlon Parker on JamiiX. In the last interview on 17 June 2010, Tech Report interviewed: She’s the Geek and Craig Ross. Today they interviewed myself, Rene Parker and Brent Williams on the JamiiX service.

So after a busy morning and early afternoon, we called it a day and wrapped up! It seems that every week more exciting things are uncovered and we get to be part of it. Well done RLabs on a successful Saturday morning.
