Come out of hibernation quite like a new toy or toys!

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that I haven’t blogged in a few months. But sometimes you have to be a big girl and deal with it. So tonight I came out of hibernation.

My husband has been away for over 2 weeks in Malaysia and I have injured my back, so have been seeing a physiotherapist for the past week. Besides being in physical pain, I have been missing my husband terribly. It seems that whenever I am sick and need a pick me up, he knows just what this girl needs. On his arrival back home this evening, I prepared a romantic dinner with place settings and all. And anyone that knows me knows that cooking is not my favorite past time. I thought I was the one to surprise him, but I should have known that he would have something (well maybe a couple of things) up his sleeve.

I’m sure normal husbands find giving their wives perfume, bags, shoes and other girly items romantic. But fortunately I have become an Apple junkie purely because my husband finds showering me with gadgets romantic. So first up besides the perfumes, shoes and bag he brought back from Malaysia he takes out an iPhone 4 as one of my get well gifts. Of course I’m speechless as we have been discussing getting me one in South Africa but our local branches hasn’t had stock in a while and I was quite content with my old iPhone 3 as it was his Valentines gift to me last year. And I’m quite sentimental and love keeping and holding onto gifts. So I say: “thank you my angel, but you didn’t have to” even though deep down I’m ecstatic to say the least. So while I’m taking it out of the box, he watches me and oooohs and aaaahs just as much as I do. So after discovering that the look and feel of the iPhone 4 is definitely more masculine than it’s predecessor it’s still got that sleekness and style that only Apple can manage (yes I know I am biased).

Then after a few minutes of me thinking that I don’t remember my back pain quite so strongly, out comes another box and this time it’s none other than the iPad 2. If I thought I was speechless with the phone I had and still have no words to describe my reaction. When I asked what’s this for he says: “knowing what a woman wants is easy and so is taking care of her needs but knowing her desires is a whole other ball game”. I have to admit I didn’t see that one coming. But it’s not polite to look a gift horse in it’s mouth, or so I’ve heard. Now I already have a iPad, which was last years birthday present from my husband. The iPad 2 is slimmer and comes with 2 cameras. And I must say it looks a little girly, which I love!

So what does a girl do with 2 iPhones and 2 iPads? Theres a saying that goes: out with the old and in with the new. For the 2 older devices I will find them a good home, someone to love them and cherish them. And my new toys, well let’s play girls!

I almost forgot to say that we never got to the romantic dinner I so lovingly prepared, as I haven’t stopped playing with my new toys and my poor husband was so jet lagged that he fell asleep while still asking me when are we going to having dinner 🙂 I’m logging off now to go put the food away and pack up the place settings. If the dinner is not too dried out we can try again tomorrow. I wish there was an App for keeping food fresh…

My new love! October 10, 2010

I love Apple and especially the sleek, extra smooth feel of their devices. Well as a woman I am well aware of my sense of touch and feel. How I measure objects is usually by sight, touch and how and it feels when sliding my hands over it. This might not be technologically sound or correct, but as women its important to stay true to ourselves and what makes us truly tick or get excited when it comes to gadgets. Yes, I said it. I used the word gadgets and excited in the same sentence.

I am especially blessed to have had the honor of receiving not only 1 but 3 Apple devices in the past 8 months. Since the birth of my mobile phone life I was a Nokia fan and each phone I had, became the love of my life. My last Nokia phone I had was a Nokia E65 which I had for over 4 years. It was the first mobile device I used to access my emails and Facebook. But then with the exposure to Social Media and friends who started using Apple products (especially the iPhone) happened to arouse my interest. So I started playing around with the idea of moving over to Apple and more specifically an iPhone. It usually takes a while for me to decide when it comes to gadgets as I believe you have to love or at least like something that will become part of who you area and a have to carry it around with you.

So my journey started around Valentines Day (14February 2010), when my husband clearly thought I was ready for the jump and surprised me with a slightly belated Valentines gift of an iPhone. My first reaction was: how do I move all my contacts and info over from my Nokia? And I felt a bit unsure. But let me tell you after the first touch I was in love and most definitely hooked. It didn’t matter that all my contacts and info was still on my old phone along with the photos. I made the jump with both feet and loved running ever since. My favorite feature on the iPhone was the WordPress app and of course Facebook and Twitter. One could say that my social media journey really took off then. Because I could lie in bed and blog, tweet, update my facebook, read up what all my friends are up to and do my emails all in one go on my iPhone. Even when I was out and about there was no barriers to keep me from staying connected. Unless the 3G reception was bad or wi-fi non-existent.

Then 5 months later I get another surprise (also from my husband), a white MacBook. I just got out of hospital and was still recovering and as a get well gift, I received a MacBook. Let me tell you that that really worked. I was moping around the house feeling real sorry for myself because my recovery was taking too long for my liking. But one look at the box and the unpacking of my new Apple toy, I completely forgot about being sick. Now being an all Windows groupie for many many many years, it was a bit of a culture shock to move over to Mac from PC. Thank goodness for google and the Apple site. I managed to navigate my way through downloading all the necessary tools to stay connected and migrating all my documents. The only thing I couldn’t get over was my windows email. Tried various tools but nothing worked. It truly amazed me how totally incompatible Mac and PC are. Unless you buy the MS Office for Mac. Well after checking out those prices, I decided to do a complete transformation and say goodbye to Windows. As I work in an environment where most devices are Windows based and even the network printers don’t come with Mac drivers, it’s a bit challenging at times. But it’s all good and life is still full of challenges no matter if you using Mac or PC. At least I don’t have to worry about viruses!

So now we are in October and it’s my birthday month. My new love is my iPad! One of my birthday gifts from my husband. My love is 3 days old and just being a newbie I only managed to do my first blog post today. Unfortunately their aren’t many apps in the App store yet. The screen is bigger than the iPhone and the apps on the iPad has more features. My favorite one so far is the WordPress app. The brilliant extra feature is that you can have all your blogs in one app. Even the self hosted blogs. As I am a contributor on several blogs this is a handy feature because now I can manage and blog from just one device and all in one app, by just switching between blogs.

I wonder how many women get introduced to a new device by means of a gift! These were definitely among some of my favorite surprises.

What did you StumbleUpon today? October 1, 2010

I do enjoy it when I StumbleUpon something easy. I have heard about and read about QR codes for a while now, but was never really interested to use it or get into it. I prefer things to be easy and just at my finger tips.

The best of the web at your fingertips

iPhone
Download from the Apple Store
Or, on your phone’s browser, visit http://www.stumbleupon.com

Android*
Point your Android phone to this QR Code.
Your barcode reader should be able to read
it and launch the Market. (no code?)

Or, on your phone’s browser, visit www.stumbleupon.com

* Easily explore pages in your favorite topics and on top sites (Flickr, YouTube, Photos, News).
* The pages you bookmark from your phone are automatically synced with your StumbleUpon account
on the web, so you can access your favorites wherever you are.
* Share easily with anyone using Email, Facebook, or Twitter.
* Optimized experience just for your mobile device.
* It’s free, and it only takes a minute to download. Learn more.

After reading this and downloading it on my iPhone last night, I thought wow now all I have to do is open the QR Reader App on my phone and there you go. Easy as pie! I was quite excited to get to RLabs today and share it with the team. But by the time I mentioned ‘QR Codes’, everyone had already downloaded it on their mobile phones. Here I thought it was only available on the iPhone and Android phone as the post above says! Also She’s the Geek tells me that Rafiq from Web Addict already sent her a link this morning on Twitter.

So there you have it. When you think you just Stumble(d)Upon something interesting somewhere else someone else Stumble(d)Upon it first! I am just glad to be surrounded with all these geeks…

The search is on…iPhoto September 7, 2010

The latter part of my day was spent playing around with iPhoto and Photobooth. I spent many hours playing with my iPhone and all it’s features, but even after receiving a MacBook from my husband as a get well gift over 2 months ago, I still spend more time on my iPhone than my Mac.

So this evening I decided to change that. After downloading some cool 3D Apple Wallpaper pics I wanted to create a slideshow and have music in the background. Well I could not figure out how to do all this on my iPhone so I switched on the Mac. After transferring all the pics into 1 folder and opening iPhoto, I discovered a whole new world. Exactly what I wanted: photos sliding in and out randomly across the screen at a pace set by me. And a nice surprise was that there is music preloaded in iPhoto. I found a song that is on the soundtrack of Twilight. Of course this was my first choice.

So after watching the Slideshow a couple of times with the music blaring and making Marlon watch it with me, I could transfer the pics to Flickr and Facebook. This was easy to do. But now I wanted to share the entire Slideshow with effects and music and all, with friends. For the life of me I could not export the slideshow as is! This is quite frustrating. I’m sure there is someone out there that knows how to do this! I will continue the search tomorrow, as one of my best friends is Google after all.

What did you do with your apple today? September 6, 2010

Spent the last 6 hours on my iPhone. Apple has really come up with an amazing device. Yes, I’m an Apple junky. Each time I think I have done it all and experienced it all this little device surprises me. Maybe there are other phones that do similar or identical tasks but I’m sure it can’t be as smooth as on the iPhone.

I started off my evening reading emails and replying. Then of course moved on to Facebook and switched over to Twitter. Once in Twitter and reading peoples updates and following their links, I stumbled upon some interesting websites. Most of these I re-tweeted and shared. The most interesting one was on how to speed up your iPhone. Do you ever look at your screen and wonder when you actually downloaded a App? Well I do, most times I completely forget about it and it just fills up my screen. So I decided to do some housekeeping. Deleted Apps I have never used or Apps that turned out to be pure junk! Definitely not what they describe it as in the store. You can’t return it but you can throw it out.

Time was reserved for the daily, iTunes updates and checking what’s new in the App Store. Nothing intrigued me tonight so no new Apps were purchased. But I did spend a lot of time downloading some new 3D Apple wallpaper. Will put it on Slideshare tomorrow, when I get onto my Mac.

During the evening I broke away to fix dinner for my husband which took all of 5mins to put in the oven and served it 20mins later. You could say that I put my phone down for all of 25mins this evening, taking into account a toilet break and putting on a movie to watch in the background. And tonights movie choice was Pretty Woman. I was privileged to be served with tea and refreshments by my dear husband during this time.

After going back to my 2 favourite Apps: Facebook and Twitter I went on to vote on She’s the Geek and RLabs for the SA Blog Awards. A couple of my favourites nominated as well are: iGeek and Tertia and Micro Blogger: Clive. Well as anyone who has been voting knows what a process it is, it took me nearly 40mins to vote and confirm my votes from all 4 my email accounts. Maybe it was just my wi-fi connection that was a bit slow.

So now my last task for the night is my. WordPress App which I’m using to blog from right now. I’m trying to blog more often, but sometimes it’s hard to put into words what I have to say. But tell me: What did you do with your Apple today?

I am … September 5, 2010

I decided to unpack my novels in the attempt of finding an easy romantic read! You might ask: why do you have to unpack novels? Why not just have on a bookshelf? Well we have a cupboard with 3 shelves dedicated to all our books. Many of them are inspirational, motivational and even educational.

But to let you in on my secret: I love books and romantic, corny soppy ones are my favourite. So I keep them in a crate stashed away on top of my cupboard. These are my books and are not for public veiwing. Now don’t get me wrong and think they are these sordid X rated books. I like clean romance with a bit of comedy or drama (depending on my mood) and always a happy ending. It is a good read in my opinion if the guy chases the girl because he thinks she is the best thing that happened to him and knows that his life won’t be complete without her in it! Soppy? I know. I also enjoy Christian novels. If you seek you will find. So I found a couple of romantic, dramatic and really funny novels by brilliant Christian women. Nice and clean and edifying and sometimes a tear jerker.

I love reading and have always found reading to relax me and inspire me at the same time. My second favourite author is: Jill Mansel and she is English. I own 10 of her books and have read each one of them at least twice. She writes in my definition: Romantic Comedies. I do wish that someone would turn them into movies. They are always romantic, funny, insightful into the female psyche, dramatic and just pure pleasure. And an easy read, you don’t have to skip the middle to get to the best part. I just hate those kind of books when you need to skip a couple of pages out of pure boredom.

My addiction for the past year and a half has been the Twilight Saga. I have all four books and managed to convert quite a few of my friends as well. These I read all the time over and over again. I even read and re-read Midnight Sun: based on the first story from Edward’s point of view. It’s only available on the website of Stephanie Meyer the author. The movies have gotten mixed reviews. But I don’t think anyone can scrap the movies if they haven’t read the books.

And of course my all time favourite is Jane Austen. I even downloaded an app on my iPhone with all Jane Austen’s books. What a difficult life she led and a tragic way it ended. Alone! After writing about love and romance. When I was in England I went to visit her tomb at Winchester Cathedral. In 1800 she started reading her novels to her family but only in 1811, her first novel Sense and Sensibility was published. As we read, being a female in those days was challenging let alone to become a writer. Men had the privilege of choosing any career they desired. But that will have to be another blog post.

So now, I took down my box and unpacked all these books and started writing this blog post while flipping through some pages and trying to decide which one to choose to read tonight. 58 books are laying on my bed and I’m thinking: what posseessed me to take them out?

I am a hopeless romantic!
