They say ‘all good things must come to an end’! Saturday past was the last class for Geeky Moms and Mom 4.0 at the RLabs Academy. The morning was filled with laughter and many tears. 2011 was the first year RLabs ran training under the Academy. As both Monique (co-founder of She’s the Geek) and I are very passionate about empowering women and technology equally, that it made absolute sense for us to facilitate the Saturday morning sessions with the women at the RLabsRLabs Academy. It has been an interesting and most fulfilling journey we have embarked on yet. My favorite part of this year has been watching the women find their inner geek! So finding the geek in every woman is most definitely possible.

Office for Mac 2011 and then some… November 1, 2010

The new version of Mac Office – the first major revision for the suite since 2008 – also includes Outlook as its e-mail client for the first time, replacing Entourage. This is probably the best news for most PC to Mac shifters. Over 1 billion PCs and Macs run Microsoft Office and Office for Mac, making the Office franchise the most used productivity suite worlwide. The latest offering for the Mac builds on Microsoft’s drive towards allowing one to work the way you want, where you want.

A few of the features to look forward to are:
1) The improvements to Outlook. Outlook for Mac 2011 allows you to see your calendar from within your email, as well as allowing you to read and save related emails in a single thread.
2) The new Office Web Apps let you post, edit and share Office documents from where you want with nearly any computer with a browser, allowing you to co-author a document with multiple people in multiple locations. (this is useful for collaborations)
3) Messenger for Mac 8 enables you to communicate in real-time with audio and video support, and Remote Desktop for Mac 2 so you can drive your Windows-based PC from your Mac.

This product is available in stores since 26 October locally, the suite comes in two editions at retail, both available with either a single user license, or a multiple user option – Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 (ERP: R999-R1299) and Office for Mac Home and Business 2011 (ERP: R2499-R2699). For better alignment across platforms, the Office for Mac 2011 pricing and edition options, map closer with Office for the Windows operating system.

This has to be the most intensive and thorough Installation and Overview Video yet to be viewed.

Skype for the MOMS!! October 21, 2010

The latest class for the Mom3.0 Cafe Session covered Skype. The women as usual came expectant and were ready to learn something new.

Monique Ross, our very own She’s the Geek did the presentation and took the women through the history of Skype, its benefits and a step-by-step guide how to sign up to Skype.

All the women signed up to Skype and updated their profiles with pictures. Thereafter, they invited friends and searched for other friends and family on Skype. Jackie Biggs (one of the moms) was brave enough to do a presentation to the rest of the class on how to sign up to Skype. She did a good job of explaining and showing the rest of the class how to sign up. She was so good that she even won a prize!

It’s very exciting to watch how the women are growing more confident with social media and within themselves. Next week we having an international Guest Speaker chatting to the women via Skype. This will be the first time this medium is used for the Mom3.0 Cafe Session to have a guest speaker. Happy calling ladies!!

We are so proud of She’s the Geek for winning best Science and Technology Blog at the SA Blog Awards 2010 held on Saturday evening at the One & Only Hotel in the Waterfront. It was a memorable night, not only because the SA Blog Awards pulled out all the stops but because the top bloggers in South Africa were all together in one room.

The nominees were buzzing with excitement and glad to finally put a face to the online persona that many have only seen. It’s a bit strange to form a bond and relationship with someone via social media and only communicate using that medium for a long time, then to see them in person and not know how to act. It is a pleasant surprise when they are the same online as offline. But that’s all part of the beauty of social media!

The question was asked: what’s next for She’s the Geek? Well we just have to follow and keep up with her to find out!

Saturday, Mom3.0 Cafe Session August 28, 2010

This morning we had a good Mom3.0 Cafe Session at RLabs.

The women braved the weather. It was pouring down with rain and very cold, yet the women came from far and near not to miss out on the class.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as we had 3 new women joining the cafe session. Todays’ session was focused on Vlogging. 3 new YouTube videos were uploaded and the women created their own YouTube accounts.

A group decision was made to have cafe sessions weekly until graduation. The group is very excited and wanting to learn and experience everything about Social Media and Social Networks. Now we as facilitators need to stay up to date and keep trying out new social media tools.

Here are some pics of the session this morning and links to the videos.

Is it too cold to blog? June 17, 2010

Is it really too cold to blog? I haven’t blogged in just about a week.

I spent the last part of my day chatting to my friend Monique or as the world knows her She’s the Geek. We had an interesting chat and as always I left with my head full of stuff. She mentioned that I haven’t been that active on Social Networks and I mentioned that she has been quiet. Even Marlon kept asking me when last I blogged? So my answer to both of them was that I haven’t felt inspired.

I only write and share my thoughts when I feel I have something to write about and have sonething worth sharing.

When I asked Monique why she’s been quiet she said: “it’s too cold to blog”.

On my way home I kept thinking about this. What makes us stop doing what we normally love doing for a while? Is it too ‘cold’ to blog, get on a social network (like twitter, facebook, gtalk, skype), be sociable, put yourself out there? Well ‘cold’ could mean different things to different people or in different situations. And yes sometimes it is too ‘cold’. Sometimes it’s ok to shut down and just be! Nothing lasts, it has to get warmer sooner or later.

So as I’m heating up (literally as I’m sitting next to the fire) and felt inspired to blog tonight after a whole week of not even visiting my blog, I would like to thank my friend for listening to me whine about where I am at and what’s frustrating me right now.

I do feel so much better and feeling inspired right now. So to everyone out there feeling ‘cold’, don’t worry you will heat up and find your groove again!

So to answer the question: Is it too cold to blog? Yes, sometimes it is!

Today at the Net Prophet event at Old Mutual, She’s the Geek was on the otherside of the interview. She’s the Geek interviews a female every week under: Woman of the Week.

She was caught off guard and had to give an interview with no preparation.

Net Prophet wanted to know what we think of the presentations so far. You will have to read She’s the Geek to hear what she has to say.
